The eastern-most country in Meringia, Valentia has always appeared to be the forgotten little brother of the larger kingdoms to the west. Though the royal house of Chelan has nominally held some form of power for at least six centuries, the country of Valentia as it is now acknowledged did not fully come into being until four centuries ago. Before that point, it was a loose affiliation of city states, owing allegiance to Valens, the largest. When the House of Chelan absorbed the other states to create the country of Valentia, it was with the aid of Pomerania, and in return, Valentia swore fealty as a vassal state of the High Kingdom in the west.

In the last decade, Valentia has ceded from Pomerania's control, due to an unstable monarch and the influence of heretical elements from Lotharingia. It remains to be seen if the country will return to its status as ally and protectorate of Pomerania in the years to come.

BRIEF OVERVIEW

Valentia's history is a closed book to much of the rest of the continent. Originally a loose affiliation of rival city states, it was brought together to form the country of Valentia itself by means of force applied by the House of Chelan with the negotiated support of Pomerania and her allies. While the city states retain their regional names and governance, true authority over the country descends from the former state of Valena, now the seat of the Royal House of Chelan and Valentia's monarchs.

Valentia is unique in Meringia in its segregation of men and women in noble circles. It is rare to see women in the royal court itself - noblewomen and children under the age of sixteen live in quarters separate from those of their husbands and fathers. The most notable example of this is the royal harem; two separate palaces in the capital city of Iska, one of which is attached to the Kings Hall itself. This adjoining palace is open only to the king, and to the servants and ministers who administer it. It is under the control of the ranking woman - usually the king's mother or sister until he marries a consort and raises her to the rank of queen, at which point the former ranking lady will retire to the other palace by custom. This is not to say that women have no influence over the government of Valentia; an intelligent woman, by means of her connection with the king, may influence policies from the royal bed if she is sensible, and those with rank of their own may form their own network of connections among the various ministers and nobles who populate the king's court.

Slavery is illegal in Meringia, by order of the Church, and indeed, Valentia abides by this ruling, at least nominally. In truth, the women gathered to the royal harem come from many different places of origin, and it is true to say that not all of them arrive willingly. However, they are well treated and educated, and many have risen to positions of influence and even power over the centuries

When a king dies, his concubines are expected to retire to the Palace of Tears, so named because it is populated by women who have lost everything with the death of their king. Any female children they have borne will remain in the royal harem, along with the former queen-consort; the new king is expected to have any male claimants to the throne executed before he is crowned, to prevent civil war.

The Coat of Arms of the Royal House of Chelan

A House known for its military leaders more than anything, the bloodline has waned a little in recent decades, resulting in the instability of the late king, Clovis. Following his death, it falls to his nephew Nasir, the youngest son of his younger half-sister, the Lady Shahista, to take control of the country whether he wishes it or not.

REGIONS

Valena
The largest region of Valentia is also the seat of the centralized government, and the ancestral city state of the Royal House of Chelan. It boasts the capital city of Iska, with three royal palaces, as well as the port city of Valens.

Manoran
The first of the city states to willingly be absorbed into the growing country of Valentia, Manoran has the distinction of being the place where the first (and to date, only) Pomeran Queen of Valentia landed following the treaty signed with the High Kingdom. Thus, its port was renamed Queens Landing, though it retains its former capital of Oran as a center of learning.

Tuela
With the happy distinction of being the only region of Valentia to enjoy a warm trade relationship with Carib, the country's southern neighbor, Tuela is major importer of leather goods and spices from the dual country they border. Lantua is the former capital, and still a major center of trade.

Sentia
Sentia distinguishes itself by means of its fishing fleet, overseen from Seles, the regional capital. All the fish eaten in Valentia, Lotharingia, and Carib, both fresh and salted, comes through Seles.

Tinoa
Tinoa is something of a troublespot for Valentia. The last of the states to cede independence to the crown in Valena, the capital of Tipora has become a hotbed of heretical preachers, encouraged by their open border with Lotharingia. Despite a number of official actions taken against such teachings, the heretics continue to thrive, and have begun to reach across the country to influence voices closer to the king.

PERTINENT PLACES

Iska

The capital city of Valentia, Iska is a jewel. With sprawling streets, many marketplaces, and three palaces, it is rightly seen as the finest city in the country.

Valens

The port of Valena, and thus the main sea-way to Valentia and its capital.

RELIGION

Adheres to the Church of the Goddess, but has definite problems with heretics within its borders. The New Church is making a push to control the next king.

CUISINE

As with other lands, though coastal regions enjoy fresh fish more regularly for obvious reasons. Coffee is drunk black and strong, and a variety of sweetmeats are made daily. The nobility obviously eat better than the populace, but they make an effort to make sure that everyone has at least one meat meal a day.
