There is no sign above the door telling you you're in the right place.  But this is Dockside.  That's how things are here.  Someone told you.  So you know this is right.

You knock once.  A metal window slides back with a thunk.  Two yellow eyes peer out at you.  Maybe you know the password.  Maybe you slip the guy a gold coin or two.  He opens the door.

You don't hear the noise until you're down the hall, down the stairs, and through the open doorway.  Then it hits you.  The sounds of a crowd.  Shouting, drinking, the meaty thunks of fists hitting flesh, the loud clash of metal on metal.  A magic spell flashes and for a moment you can see the whole space of it.

Men and women of all races packed around makeshift rings, surrounding fighters facing off.  There are no wards here.  The concrete floor is stained with blood.  No mats.  No ropes.  No padding.  Sometimes cardboard is set down to soften the blows.  People don't die here.  Usually.

There's not much seating.  A few steps lead up to a platform along two sides of the room.  You can find a better view here.  Set your beer on the railing as you watch.  If you can find an open space.

There's a bar at the back, but you better have cash on you.  No credsticks, no credit, no tabs.  Pay as you go.  There's no seating here either.  You're here to watch the fights, right?

You'll also need cash if you want to place a bet.  Old Salty is in the corner sitting on an overturned bucket, his white hair peeking from under a ratty sailor's cap.  Beside him is a chalkboard with a list of names.  Nothing says what the names mean, but the regulars know.  That's the leaderboard.  Want to get your name up there?  Better get a fight.

Put your name on the sign-up board.  Wipe the chalk off your hands.  Someone puts a beer in your hand while you wait.  "Good luck, kid," someone says.  "You're gonna need it," they laugh.

Welcome to The Hold.

The Hold -- OOC

The Hold is an all-sports fighting venue.  Fists.  Swords.  Magic.  All rings are unwarded including magic---your character better look out for wayward spells anywhere in the venue.

Even though the rings are unwarded, the normal rules of cooperative roleplay apply to fights here.  Roleplay should be give and take between the characters
and the players. Killing blows, chopped off limbs, scorched skulls, are only acceptable with consent of both players and should be played out in a cooperative manner.

Fights called by an official will count as regulation duels.

Unofficial fights are welcome.  If you want to roleplay a fight that is not a duel, just give the caller a heads-up.  The caller will acknowledge the fight as a part of the action, but will not provide play-by-play commentary or designate a winner.  Unofficial fights will not be included on the leaderboard.

Oddsmakers are welcome---if you're interested in roleplaying as the official oddsmaker on a particular night of play, please contact DUEL Reid.

This Saturday, April 21 at 9ET, the Hold will be hosting its very first Call-Out Night.

Got a grudge with someone?  Want to see if you can best your friend?  Call them out for a fight and settle it once and for all at the Hold.

Issue your challenge by adding your name and your opponent’s name to the chalkboard outside the Hold any time between now and Saturday.  Have you been called out?  Use the chalkboard to accept your challenge.

Jewell Ravenlock vs. Canaan & Salvador (challenges not yet accepted)
Mallory St. Martin vs. Ilana & Anima of House of Summer (challenges not yet accepted)
Tahlia Faras vs. Jewell Ravenlock, 3:1 odds

((Post your call-outs in this thread by adding your name and the person you want to fight below.  No one is obligated to accept a fight.  If you accept, please post below.  The chalkboard will be updated with call-outs and acceptances on a rolling basis.  There is no limit to the number of issued challenges.

Both fighters must agree on the format (fists, swords, magic, or roleplay-only).  As usual, roleplay-only fights will not be refereed by the caller, but they will be acknowledged as part of the ongoing action.  Fights are not for titles, but will be counted as regulation duels like usual.))

Mallory St. Martin calls out the cowards Ilanna and Anima, both of the House of Summer, to fight to the first cry of mercy.

Tahlia Faras

Suit #1 looked over the team that had put together the Real RhyDin show, and pinched the bridge of his nose.  Ratings had been good.  Not great, but good -- but then, they were better than anything the network had had for a good long time.

“So, explain to me again why we want to do this?”

Dude #1, still reeking of reefer, stared at him bug-eyed for a moment, and then waved his hands wildly.  “OK, ok. So… we didn’t get the big fight we wanted between Jewell and Tahlia. Who figured those two would have self control? But -- BUT… we can start building buzz for next season.”

Dude #3 jumped in, talking rapid fire over the stoner’s drawl.  “They still don’t like each other, and there’s been a few run-ins, postseason--nothing big, but enough.  Rumors, Tahlia showing up for her Madness bout dressed in gear from The Line, and with the squire’s scepter from Old Temple. They’re civil, barely, when they see each other, but we think we can fix that.”

Suit #1 sighed, and leaned back in her chair.  “So you want to set up a grudge match at this new place--The Hold--right? In the hopes that it will make people tune in and keep up the attention on their rivalry until they fight in IFL next year. Hell, assuming there is an IFL next year.”  He glanced at the brief synopsis available on RhyDin’s newest dueling venue.  “No cameras, no holds barred.” His eyebrows went up, “No wards.  Hmm. What makes you think they’ll show?”

Dudette #4 slid two sheets of paper across the table: One from Tahlia to Jewell, the other from Jewell to Tahlia, both flinging the same insults they’d tossed at each other with brittle, sharp smiles.  “They won’t turn down a challenge.”

Suit #1 thought, not for the first time, that he was getting too old for this.  “Ok.  Go ahead and send the notes -- wait, stipulate it’s Fists only.  Don’t want to risk either of them getting killed.  We could be liable if people found out.  And get in touch with this Conner Reid guy.  He seems to be running things over there.  Personally, I don’t think it’s worth it, but it won’t cost the network anything to see if your idea works.”

((if anyone wants to place bets for this fight ahead of time, please PM me!)
