Lirssa watched Weston laying on the floor of the small bridge. Her feet propped on the edge of the helm. While he worked on the wiring, a spill of electrical innards across one arm, Lirssa turned the small box over and over in her hands. The panel was clear, not yet live and connected to the Motley Moxie. ?And you?re sure this will let folks with those gadgets message the Moxie??
Weston sighed, but obliged to answer for the fifth time. ?Yes, if you?re off planet or in RhyDin City proper, it will feed through. It?s just a switch. Will feed into your com like any other messages.? He paused to point a dirty hand to the device she was twisting about. ?And that?ll feed through fine, too, when you turn it on.?
A frown at the object staring at her with its blank screen. ?I?m not turning it on until I have to. Emergencies and such. Can?t see as anyone needs to get in touch with me exactly, but I may need to get in touch with others.?
?If you want emergencies, you better add voice to that ? get a better device.?
?No,? Lirssa was emphatic. It was to communicate. The events of the last month ? well, she had finally convinced herself to get one of them. ?No, it is just so people with those devices can message to my ship. And this,? she set the device on the helm panel, ?is for when I?m not on my ship. That?s it.?
Weston began the tedious work of placing the length of cabling and wires into the helm panel before scooting from beneath. ?Well, you?re set.? He dug around in a pocket to produce his own gadget. With a few punches and some sweeps of his callused thumbs, he said, ?There now.? Craning to look up at the com screen while he rose to his feet.
On the com screen was a message with a series of numbers and letters. ?That?s the code they punch in to send the message to the Moxie.?
Lirssa smirked and nodded. ?Thanks, Weston.?
?It?s what I?m paid for.? A beat. ?You are paying me, right??
?Yes,? Lirssa sighed. She took her feet down from the panel and leaned forward to type up the link to her account. After her own quick inputs, she gave a nod. ?Credits transferred.?
?Thanks, kid. Enjoy!? He shuffled off, a hand to his back. He was getting old.
?Yeah,? Lirssa picked up the gadget again, pushing the power button and watching the screen flicker to life and pass through the same message on her com screen. ?Thanks.?
