Many DM/RDI members received PMs from the SN "AdminLady" that contained a link to a malicious web site. The spam account has been dealt with. We will never send you links to such sites, and any PMs you get will come directly from one of our actual admin names, never some generic type name. If you receive such a PM, please just delete it.

Site News / JUN 27: Eye of the Beholder
« on: June 27, 2009, 10:24:31 AM »
We're trying something out called "Eye of the Beholder".

Basically, the idea is to take a slice in time during live role=play and get those that were there to write about things that took place during that time from their own characters perspective.

Our first run at this is going to center around last night's wedding of Taneth and Tormay.

For more info... head over to the Eye of the Beholder folder under Dragon's Tales.

Eye of the Beholder / Eye of the Beholder - The Wedding
« on: June 27, 2009, 10:17:05 AM »
The idea for Eye of the Beholder came back to me, in part, because of the wedding of Taneth and Tormay last night, and they have both agreed to let last night's event be used as our initial trial run.

So....

If you where there last night, we want you to post! Tell us about the evening from your character's perspective. While it obviously will center around the wedding and festivities afterwards, you do not need to focus on "the wedding". Tell us about what your character was feeling, their thoughts, what they experienced while at this event.

If you need a refresher, here's links to the logs...

10-11pm
11-midnight
midnight-1am
1-2am
2-3am

Those logs encompass from when thing started through when the happy couple left. You do not need to write about the entire period of course, or even the entire period your character was there. Pick something... well... it's your pick.

Now, if you were not there, you aren't being left out. If you would like, go through the logs and give us a "fly on the wall" perspective. Pick out some things that happened and tell us about them.

This is a chance to be creative, and kind of compare how you/your character sees things differently, even when looking through the same viewfinder as others.

You have one week to post your stuff... post them as replies to this message here... I'll "lock" the thread sometime the morning of July 4th.

Eye of the Beholder / What is "Eye of the Beholder"?
« on: June 26, 2009, 10:43:29 PM »
Some of you may have read the Thieves World series years ago... it's a series I often refer to as an example of collaborative writing. It's a collection of ongoing, short stories by different authors.... and the authors often refer to and use each others characters.

This led to me thinking a while back about how we all see the same thing in different ways.... which got me thinking about an idea for a "writing contest", which I decided to call "Eye of the Beholder".

The basic concept is this... take a specific period in the Inn or something, and invite those that were there to write about what happened while they were there, of course it is from their own characters point of view.

Anyone that wasn't there could use the posted logs to write about things that occured from a "fly on the wall" perspective.

Now, I refer to it as a writing contest, but as of yet... I don't know that we plan on doing any sort of judging, and I don't really have any prizes.... but I think this would be a fun challenge for all of you.

Long story short, I've got some ideas on getting this going, so look for more details to come. And if it gets some good response, I think it's something we could do on a fairly regular basis.

Let me know what you think.

Tales of the Cat / The Gift
« on: June 20, 2009, 11:14:34 PM »
He had spent a good portion of the afternoon finalizing the purchase and delivery of S'jira's birthday gift. It kept him away from the Inn and the loft much longer than he had anticipated. For better or worse, S'jira was not at the loft when he arrived back to the stable.

The gift was put in one of the empty stalls that had been made ready and he left some instructions that nobody was to go in there until he returned.

Heading in to the Inn through the back, he was able to quickly pick out her scent among all the others. It was not in the Inn, but was fairly strong... and lead to the stairway for the Arena.

He found her there, watching the couple of duels taking place. He moved up behind her, his hands finding her shoulders and his cheek finding hers as he leaned in over her to greet her. Lips found her neck for a brief moment as his hands massaged her shoulders and he stood upright again. They talked a bit as the current duels finished up.

She asked where he had been and he could feel the warmth from her smile as he mentioned he had been getting her birthday present. After a bit more conversation he suggested that maybe she could have her gift early.... and she nearly burst out of her seat. In short order they were on their way out of the Arena and back towards the Stables and their loft.

He paused outside one of the stable bays where both halves of the door were closed. After grabbing a carrot from one of the feed baskets he broke it half and offered it to S'jira, telling her she may need it.

"Do we ride tonight then?" she asked?

"Maybe..." was his answer, then bade her to look inside.

His gaze remained locked on her face as she opened the door and looked inside. Her eyes went wide and she said nothing for a moment... then two... before finally at barely a whisper she asked "mine?".

"Yes. His name is Trygg" he replied.

She turned and nearly lept up against him in a hug, one he readily accepted and returned, before turning back to offer the carrot to the large black stallion waiting patiently inside the bay.

The trip to the Marketplace was a good one.

What the trader showed him was almost exactly what he was looking for. The right color... maybe a bit larger than he initially thought, but he felt S'jira would be fine with it. And just in time, with only a few more days until her birthday.

After taking some time to give a very thorough examination and a bit more time in the bartering over the price a deal was struck. The trader would have half the gold by the end of the day and the rest when he made the delivery at the end of the week.

The rest of his errands were finished quickly, the whole time he was wondering if he should give her the gift a bit early. It will be hard to hide this, even for a day or two. Plus, it may be nice to let her enjoy it over the weekend as well.

Plans for what else he could do for her that evening were spinning about in his mind as he made it back to the Inn and the days work took once again.

Word had made it back to him that a trader in the marketplace may have what he was looking for.

More specifically it was an idea he had as a gift for jira's upcoming birthday. He still wasn't sure if this was going to be the right gift or not, he wouldn't know till he saw what the peddler had to offer. But he had been fairly specific in what he was looking for... so with a bit of luck... and the peddler knew enough to not risk him wasting his time looking at anything less that what he had detailed.

He had to head to the Marketplace to place orders for the Inn anyways, so an extra stop would not put his day behind in the least.

Tales of the Cat / Wandering Thoughts
« on: June 15, 2009, 10:33:08 PM »
It was a warm day, nearly summer. He was up on the roof of the Inn, checking the shakes that protected the rooms below. The spring rains brought forth a few new leaks and reminded him the roof would need tending. He walked the roof back and forth in courses, pulling out those showing signs of rot or damage. Who would think a roof would get so much traffic as to require such constant repairs.

This was one of those things that could easily be hired out, but he enjoyed the work. Being in the sun and just doing his work, forgetting the day-to-day issues if even for just a few hours. It let him clear his head.

It was fairly mindless work, which meant his thoughts were free to wander. And as they often did, they wandered to S'jira. Her birthday was coming soon and he still had no idea for a gift.

It had been over a year now that they had been together now as well. In some ways it seems as if she had been there with him for much longer, other days it was still felt as new to him as if it had only been weeks instead of months.

The past months were marked with many things. The building of the loft so he could give her a home. While it was still essentially just two rooms, it was larger and much more private than being in the Inn itself. And being near the horses has been something she has enjoyed as well.

A glance upward at the sun told him it was late afternoon. He should get cleaned up, 'jira was cooking dinner and he promised to not be late. He finished with the shake he was currently fitting in place and grabbed up his things and headed along the edge of the roof towards the back of the Inn where the loft over the stables was.

After spending about a week in doing repairs to the roof of the stables, he was now getting ready to rip piece of that roof apart.

The winter had not been kind to the roof that covered the loft over the stables, and while cleaning out what was mostly an collection of un-used junk he realized just how nice, how large a space that loft was.

The stables themselves were not used as much of late, and most of the straw and oats that used to be kept in the loft were now in the lower area where they were more accessible. Some tools and things, most of which would fit in an but a quarter of the loft, were still kept up here. Thoughts and ideas played through his mind as he worked on the roof repairs, and by the time they were done a general plan had formed itself.

Walling off a bit more than half the loft, at where the stairs came up, he could create a rather nice living space. One large enough for a sleeping area, a bath, and even a sitting area and small hearth for cooking.

It was not as if he needed the space, his room in the Inn was fine enough. But more and more thoughts of more than just himself were at the forefront of his mind. This loft would be big enough for him, and for S'jira. She would have room to work on her sewing, there could be a small table for them to eat at. Maybe even a couch by the hearth as well.

To the western side, the full height wall would be fine once some windows were added. On the eastern side, the sloping roof would not be a terrible thing, but maybe a couple dormer to allow air to flow in the warmer months and a bit more light as well.

And that is what he was doing now, ripping in to that roof for the first dormer. One that would be in the sleeping area, near the end of the loft. Large enough to be a quiet place for S'jira to sit while doing her bead work.

He had planned to do the dormer first, but a bit of rain kept him inside for a few days. The rough framing for the bath was in. There was water that serviced the stable he could work off of, which was good. He had grown quite accustomed to his private bath. Especially the ones of late that were not-so-private.

A slip of a smile crossed his face at those thoughts, and once again he had to wonder how he had come to this place. How she had come to his life. They were questions that would ultimately remain unanswered, but that was ok.

Tales of the Cat / Sweet Dreams

The moonlight spilling in from the window cast a silver glow about the room, his own shadow falling across the foot of the bed as he stood behind the arm chair, his folded arms resting on the back of it.

Even without the moonlight, he would see her plain as day in his mind. Each curve, angle and line from the rounding of her ears to the splaying of her toes as she walked barefoot across the floor.

But right now, he just watched her. There was still enough light for him, even in this current form to plainly make out her features as she lay curled up, partially covered by the blankets. Her dark hair splashed across the lighter fabric of the pillow. Her chest rising and falling a bit with each breath.

He had no idea how things came to this point. He wasn't sure he cared. S'jira was so unlike any other woman he had let so close. Scratch that, in her own way, she was as strong or stronger than any of them, but she was also still discovering herself.

A bit of a shiver ran down his back. The cool night air is noticed much more when he is not wearing his 'coat'. A quick glance over his shoulder and he figures there is still a couple hours to go before the sun comes up, and a bit longer before either of them need to actually rise.

Moving from behind the chair he steps up alongside the bed, and careful to  not disturb her sleeping form he pulls aside the blanket and slides back under them himself. Her skin feels warm against his as he gets settled and she moves closer in her sleep.

He manages to slip an arm under the pillow her head is on, and a moment later she shifts again, an arm is draped across his chest and his shoulder becomes  her new pillow. He turns his head to press a light kiss to her temple. His eyes closing as he draws in a slow breath and drinks in her scent... holding it for a few moments before exhaling as he lays his own head back against his pillow, drifting back to sleep again with very pleasant thoughts still floating through his mind.
