Title: OOC Discussion
Post by: Darien Fenner on November 17, 2009, 12:29:05 PM
Greetings! Welcome to the RhyDin Post!

This folder is for articles published in the local periodical, the RhyDin Post, as well as reactions to articles, visits to the official office, and even applications to become a writer for the Post.

If you wish to have a character apply for a position at the newspaper, please post an application in the folder, and PM Darien Fenner to ensure that I get it. :)

Please place any OOC comments here. Thanks for visiting!

::dies!::  Win, win, WIN!  Congratulations, Salvador, Lover of Various Ham Products.  And to Sinjin, Who Needs to Smile More Often.

Still think Harold's number 1 hunk, but...

Yes, but it appears to be more like a "Dear Abby" than what I had in mind.  I was thinking more like something Franco's got in the GG folder.  Some place where other people can post letters for all the player base to see, for the amusement "I'm involved" factor.   ;-)
Title: Re:

Just a clarification-- the Letters to the Gossip Column thread is both for responses to articles and for relationship advice. ;] So feel free to post there for either.

I'll put Dris's letter up for you, though. Thanks!
Title: Re:

Thank you for the clarification!  I wasn't sure, so that's why I PM'd you with it.  Though, to be honest... I think I like it better when you receive them as PMs and print them the way you do.  Like Tara's letters.  Haha! ♥Tara.

Greetings, all!

First off, thanks for making the Post such a success. I appreciate all the messages I've been getting immensely!

Second, I want to apologize that I haven't been updating as frequently as I like. This is partly because I have been incredibly busy, and partly because when I have combed through logs and forums, I haven't seen anything particularly public or news-worthy. So this is just a tiny reminder. I welcome story ideas! If you have a SL going that you want publicity for, by all means message me and I'll see if we can't work something out. Or, if you have a gossip article idea, or saw something really scandalous in one of the chats one day, don't hesitate to let me know!

All that aside, thanks for the readership, and I look forward to hearing/playing with you all in the future!

Not sure if this is the right place for it or not, but I about killed myself laughing over the commercial for Most Nefarious Villain. Especially the girl in the audience, "you are on television therefore you must be desireable!"

I am so going to have Aolani wear a T-Shirt supporting the show.

Post by: Darien Fenner on April 10, 2010, 05:10:59 AM
Hi, all!

A few reminders. Remember that the poetry contest deadline is April 28th. There is still plenty of time to get your work in! The other judges and I are dying to see what the whole of RhyDin has to offer, creativity-wise!

Also, if there is a fight you would like featured, please don't hesitate to give me a shout. I've been getting a bunch of requests, and you have no idea how immensely helpful those are!

That being said, I'm sure you'll notice I've been covering a loooot of fights and not so much news lately. There are two reasons for that. One, Madness is pretty much on everyone's minds lately, including me, and I absolutely love keeping up with the dueling crowd. They really are a lively bunch. And two, news-wise, I'm coming up kind of short lately. I don't know if it's a writer's block or if people just aren't into doing news-worthy things lately, but even though I've been scanning the forums, I can't always find something to report on. So this is another reminder: If you see something gossip-worthy or news-worthy that you think should be featured, please don't hesitate to let me know! I welcome suggestions!

All that aside, I am working on a few stories, and I hope to have those posted soon. I also have a few more ideas brewing, so hopefully I can kick this writer's block!

Thanks for the readership, folks!
Title: Re:
Post by: Darien Fenner on April 11, 2010, 06:23:38 PM
Several thank yous are in order.

One: Thank you very much to all of the electoral candidates I was able to get a hold of for agreeing to interview with me. I know that it was a little bit of a hassle for some of them, and I am greatly appreciative that they went out of their way to make time for the interview and to answer my questions. You guys rock!

Two: Thank you very much to the people who I approached for comments on the candidates and on recent stories, and thank you to the people who also helped offer more information regarding the election, the candidates, and the past elections. You know who you are.

Three: Thank you very much to the people who have continued to supply me with story and fight requests. Requests help immensely, especially when I have a lot on my plate and am not able to sift through the logs or the forums for a scoop.

The election articles are posted, and having been written by Fenner, who is notoriously analytical and opinionated when it comes to politics, you will notice that a lot of them (if not all of them) are extremely critical and possibly biased. For this reason, I have made sure to include as many of the actual interviews on that same thread to allow you and your characters to make an unbiased choice when it comes to who you would like to be elected as Governor.

All that said, I hope I never have to write eight articles and conduct three interviews in one and a half days ever again.

Thanks one more time, everybody!
Title: Re:
Post by: BardGallant on April 12, 2010, 11:52:50 AM
You should be giving yourself a hearty pat on the back (or eight), Fenner, my dear.  Those articles on the election candidates were a fabulous read.  I'm giddy to see what you've done with the interviews, mine included.  Had a blast playing that scene with you too.  Can't wait to see what else Mr. Opinionated has to say during the course of the election.
Title: Re:
Post by: Warlock on April 12, 2010, 07:16:32 PM
I'm sad that I won't be getting to do any more election stuff (at least for this year!) with you, but I'm very happy we got to interview and discuss together.  It's been a delight working with you, and I hope we get to do more stories together in the future. =)

P.S.  Your election interviews and articles all rock!  Must've been hard work, I know, but you totally kicked ***!

Greetings, all!

Just a few reminders:

If you would like an unbiased opinion of the candidates, please see the logs from the debate. They will be posted in an easy-to-read form soon, I'm sure!

Also, thank you very much to everyone who helped with the latest article!

And lastly, as the Madness is winding down, so are the number of duels, and I've been having trouble locating specifically Madness matches. If your character is in the final four and you'd like a write-up, please let me know when and where the fight will be.

Thanks again for all the support.

Title: Re:

While those carnival logs were pretty darn tiring to go through, I've got to say that it was certainly a blast to do so! I'd like to thank Marc Franco's player again for the permission to do the latest writeup; I hope things get better for them soon.

This is important, folks. In the past, whenever I wrote on gossip, I would PM every single person I mentioned in my articles for permission to include their character. But, for the most part, I got nothing but resounding affirmatives, so that policy kind of deteriorated. This past week, though, I received a complaint from a player whose character I included at the behest of another player. So here's my new policy! If I write up on your character and you'd prefer I didn't, please shoot me a PM and I will make sure not to include your character in the Post in the future. And if you absolutely can't stand him or her being in an issue, I will even edit it and remove the significant bits for you. I don't want to step on anyone's toes!

On that note, back to the carnival writeup! If you'd rather I not include your character from now on, please say so. But let me first tell you all that I had a complete blast writing that article. :] I quite enjoy studying your characters and seeing what kinds of trouble they get into!
Title: Re:

So I know there's a Shameless Plug Thread, and I know I'm waaaay late on the uptake here, but I'll just link you guys again anyway. I could not stop reading this, and wound up staying up until five am this morning doing so:

"The Caper." (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14485)

It's been around for a while, but if you haven't read it, I strongly recommend it. It is one of the best threads I've had the privilege of reading and writing about on DM. :]

Sorry for the lack of updates again. Lots of RL business has reared its ugly head and I haven't had the opportunity to write. I'll work on something to post as soon as I can.

And DONE.

That is the last installment from the Ministry series. It only took me about a month to complete. Sorry about that, folks. Lots of things came up. But now it is done, and I can move on to other things.

Thanks for the readership, and as always, if you would like an unbiased examination of the Minister offices, please see the attached transcripts.

Also a hearty thank you very much to all the players involved, as I really had a blast interviewing them and getting to know their characters. A round of applause goes to those Ministers, as they are some of the most gracious and accommodating folks I have met.

Thanks again!

::Applause::

Just a blurb about the latest projects:

A few pieces are in the works, and I've contacted a few people regarding those stories, but it still might take some time until the next huge one, so please be patient!

On that note, I'm working on compiling a big list by Bane of just about what makes RhyDin ridiculous. Going back as far as you can remember, I would really welcome PMs and suggestions about any particular instances in the past or present that stick out in your mind as either a WTF moment, one that made you pass out laughing, or one that made you cringe in shame and embarrassment. Examples can be anywhere from that time some priest was trying to convert your character to his religion, to when some painting leapt off the wall to try and eat a patron of the Inn, to when someone open-fired on the Inn itself with a cannon just because. I know there are lots of them, but for the life of me, I can only come up with a few. Lots and lots of research is in order for this one. ;]

I made up and put in the order for some RhyDin Post dueling t-shirt inventory items. Since scaling it down makes it impossible to read, here is the original item:

Just a pleasant reminder, folks:

The "Vox Populi; What Do You Think?" (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17178) segment is designed to encourage readers to write in with their opinions. And while it can serve as food for thought, I would like to remind you all that if you'd like to share your opinions on the topic and have them "published," this can serve as an IC, printed newspaper forum of sorts.

On another note, I have only a few story ideas lately, so I have unfortunately been coming up short with the updates. If you see anything newsworthy in the forums or the chats, please don't hesitate to PM me and let me know. I love showcasing your characters!

Thanks for the readership!

Title: Re:
Post by: Darien Fenner on August 16, 2010, 06:30:28 PM
In case I missed anything for the Review (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17567) article, your character is welcome to write in and remind my reporters.

Let me clarify something, because I've gotten a few questions about it. Technically, OOC, the Post's anniversary was August 12, seeing as it was the first article I ever wrote for the newspaper. But there are two things to address. Number one, I was out of town, and that article took a long time to research and to write, so yes, OOCly, the anniversary article was a little bit late.

Number two, if you'll notice, IC I have specifically kept the anniversary year of the Post ambiguous. That is because I had originally intended for the newspaper to be a long-standing establishment that has only become well-read recently because of Darien Fenner's biased and controversial contributions. However, I see how this might bother some people, so I am open to opinion on the matter. :] So for now it'll remain ambiguous.

In other news, hope everyone's August is going well. And always remember, I do appreciate story ideas, so if you see anything that jumps out at you in play or on the forums, don't hesitate to PM me!

Dear Emmet,

This Sylus Kurgen must be stopped! Even though I refused to buy my boys his action figures, (I don't condone violence, even if it is a sport here) they still managed to get a hold of a pair of them. Little Chase was in the hospital for three days after the self-destruct mechanism misfired and he had a major concussion! And now I'm being told that Mr. Kurgen was seen assaulting poor Icer, the heroine of mothers like me everywhere, and trying to ride her?! I'm not talking about hopping on and going for a fly. I'm talking about putting a saddle and reins on her and treating her like an inferior being! Now all my boys can talk about is how they want to be like Lang Darkwing and Sylus Kurgen when they grow up, and they're looking into starting dragon-riding intramurals at their elementary school! This is completely unacceptable, and I cannot stand for it any more! I've begun to put together resources to form the Mothers Against Sylus Kurgen (M.A.S.K.) group. Spread the word. This is not a role model our children should look up to!

Absolutely classic.

Great article on and interview with Jolyon and his Rumours Mill!

I will admit that if I as the writer knew more about wine, Riley as the character would drink it a lot more.  But as I thoroughly subscribe to the "write what you know" way of doing things, she's all about the scotch and beer.

Title: Re:

Hi, all.

I did some housekeeping in the Post folder. Since the Letters thread was getting too cluttered, I decided to move all Unpublishable Letter Rejects to their own thread. I realize one entry doesn't exactly belong there, but I don't think I care enough to try and figure out how to move it back to letters without a place marker. ;]

I apologize for the lack of updates recently. I have a few projects underway, but unfortunately those require waiting for some feedback from a few people, so it looks like I won't be able to update again until I get it.

I know that I always pose this reminder, but I have been having some problems lately and it's been a little difficult to keep up with the goings-on in live play and in some of the folders on the forums. So please! If you see something newsworthy that you'd like a story about, I would thoroughly appreciate some notice. It is immensely helpful.

Best wishes to everyone, and I hope you will all join me in welcoming the newest Post writer, Annie Mitchell.
Title: Re:

I'm going to get a really, extremely early jump-start on the special November issue for the Post I'm planning for and start asking now.

What is your character thankful for in RhyDin? If you're interested in contributing and have the time to write me a quick blurb, PMs would be great! I haven't decided whether these responses will be solicited via live interviews by my reporters or via letters to the newspaper, so just to be safe, it should all be considered IC.

Thanks for the continued readership, folks!
Title: Re:
Post by: Darien Fenner on October 15, 2010, 02:21:40 PM
I am kind-of-sort-of back following a brief break for my health.

I have about five projects in the works, so stay tuned. ;] As soon as I get feedback from the ones I contacted, I will get back on the ball and start writing again. So make sure to check your PMs.

Also. There is a lot going on with the Scarred SL, so if you would like a certain incident specifically featured, or would like to offer a comment regarding the invasion, please feel free to message me. It can be safely assumed that Post reporters would be all over this. I also gladly welcome Op-Ed articles, so feel free to use that folder!

It's been difficult to keep up these days, so as always, if you see something newsworthy, please don't hesitate to PM me!

A few notes about the latest sports article (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18327).

Before I am asked, no, I unfortunately don't have any pictures of Oakenshield to make icons. You are, however, welcome to incorporate any purchase of said items into your play if you wish. And heck, I'd actually be thoroughly amused if the Post got sued for profiting off Jeff's face. ;]

That being said, if you have any concerns or complaints about the latest article, you are always welcome to shoot me a PM. I welcome criticism as much as critiques. It's what helps me improve as a writer, and as a person.

I would also like to thank Tormay's player for collaborating with me on that one, as well as the two dueling experts slash veterans whom I tirelessly hounded asking for help and ideas. You know who you are, and I really appreciate your patience and courtesy!

And lastly, I would, however, like to make up an honorary plaque icon for someone who gets the most duels in before December. I'll even throw in some coin as an incentive. :]  So if you keep track of your wins and losses, by all means shoot me a PM with your numbers. Else I'll work on getting the information myself!

Thanks for your kind words, all!

Log scavenging for an entire day occasionally hurts my soul.

The usual reminder: If you'd like your character removed from the latest gossip article (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18378), PM me and I'll do so immediately.

I would also like to mention that I wanted to write a bit more for that one, but the logs suddenly became unavailable for me and stopped working about forty minutes ago, and I don't have the mental capacity to try and figure out what is wrong. I don't know what the deal is - they just stopped loading, and I know it's not a Mozilla error, because I've restarted it and my computer twice. Oh well. I'll write more next time, I promise!

If it hasn't been brought to your attention already, try this page (http://duelingzone.org/madness/chat_viewer/) for viewing the logs.  It might help them to be less painful.  It's fairly straight forward, but an explanation of the options can be found here (http://www.ringsofhonor.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23790).  Log availability could have been an issue on the server, though they appear to be there now.

Great article as always.  Now I need to go hunt down Taneth... ::grumbles::

Two things about the new list (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18396):

If you would prefer your character not be mentioned, PM me immediately and I'll remove him or her and create a new slot. I made a point to ensure that all the names that were mentioned were either spoken out loud during play, or are publicly known. But in case I slipped up and made a mistake, I will be happy to be corrected.

Also, keep in mind that most of the jokes lie primarily in the song titles. Some of the actual song lyrics aren't entirely pertinent. ;]

As always, hit me up with a PM if you'd like your character removed from the Top 25 Sexiest Women in RhyDin (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18495) list. I'm a fallible person, so if you feel like I've made a mistake, don't hesitate to let me know!

That one took a heck of a lot of narrowing down and weeding out. Some characters I had to bump for inactivity, but I will be honest - others it truly made me cringe to have to remove. If your character was removed, it doesn't mean I like her any less; it just means that this is a new year and we needed to see some fresh faces.

And while the list is technically six days early, I would like to make this a yearly thing if I can help it. I would have published it on the tenth, but getting the feedback for Bane inspired me to go ahead and do it now. So thank you, folks. Believe it or not, those polls are immensely helpful. As are all of your wonderful PMs. I really appreciate those.

The Top 25 Sexiest Men list should be up in two to three days. This one took a very long time and a lot of effort and research, so I anticipate the same amount of work will go into the one for the guys.

Thanks for the continuing readership!

I hope this is the correct place to put this:

I wanted to give thanks where thanks were due as I did over at the Gossip GangStar. While I am attempting a Gossip Girl meet Harry Potter-esque theme I feel the idea might not have occurred to me without the wonderful examples on this site.

And as I wrote earlier, "they say imitation is the highest form of flattery."

While I have absolutely no plans on branching outside of my little community I still felt it proper to give note.

Thank you

And thank you for picking up the torch when it faltered. I always enjoy reading about other characters.

Notes about the RhyDin Post Pub Crawl 2011:

This event is vapored! Theoretically, the crawl should start around 5 PM RST and last as long as you want it to. Your characters are more than welcome to say they went on the Post crawl - that is the entire point. The experience is YOURS and anything can happen, so have fun with it!

YES! much of the Post staff will be on the crawl, so feel free also to say that your character saw or chatted with one of them there. Emmet Bane will be there, though naturally I can't specify exactly when and where. If you want for your character to have had a significant interaction with him (or with any other Post members, for that matter) please feel free to PM me and we can work something out.

Regarding the coasters! There will be lots of them at every stop, and each type of coaster offered at the stops are different. The trip offered is funded by the Post and is part of a publicity stunt to get more readers, as registering for the contest also puts contestants on the Post mailing list (three cheers for corporate sneakiness). I did, however, make up some coaster icons for fun. So if anyone else thinks that this is or was a good idea and wants an icon, let me know. If I get enough positive feedback, I'll order some.

Again, this experience is YOURS, so do with it what you will. And naturally feel free to write in about it, either IC or OOC. I welcome feedback!

Have fun, and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

You know... while writing that, I was toying with the idea of having the anchors refer to a Post Official Offworld Dueling Tour that they were following for a few segments that they could possibly nominate some RhyDin fighters for, and I wanted to hint slightly at it. But now that I think about the mechanics of it, I really don't think that would work out very well.

My bad. :] That'll be the last you hear of it, I promise.

Hey, you can do whatever you wanna do, it's cool by me. :D  My concern was only very slightly about if someone had said there was going to be another TdR coming up, and I hadn't heard about it.  Being in the position I am, I should be like, one of the first to know.  Also, was mildly concerned that saying there was a tour would make others think that there's a TdR planned.  Which there isn't, and between everyone and me, I'm not a fan of it.

I do have something planned for after madness, that you might be interested in, though. :)  I'm waiting for an opportune moment to announce it.

This is a quick reminder to everyone to read the FAQs if there are any questions about the Post or its articles, as I've been getting a few. So clarification! 99.9999% of the time, anything published as satire (i.e., written by Enderwood) can be classified as "fake news." And naturally, no malice whatsoever is meant by it!

Also. VOTE!

Quick Note about Ad creation:

I would love to help you create what it is you "see" for your ad.

If, however, an element of that ad is of your imagination and can't be found anywhere, it will be extremely difficult to create.

So. If you have something you would like added to an ad-- don't hesitate to say so, we'll arrange a method of file transfer. We have the technology!

Thank you for your time and continued support of the RhyDin Post!

Extending a huge apology for not getting an article out this month. My excuse is less than twenty days old, and has the ability to totally wipe my brain with a gurgle. I will definitely have one out next month, I promise!

Also ... brilliant work as always from the real writers of the Post!

Hey There!

We have what we hope will be an exciting new addition to the RhyDin Post.
The RhyDinPost.com!

It has all you've come to love about the RhyDin Post with the addition of RhyTweet. That's right, you can now add your "Tweets" to the Buzz!

So with no further ado, we present to you  The RhyDinPost.com (http://rhydinpost.com/).

ETA: The RhyTweet page does not work very well with the IE (Internet Explorer) browser. You can view, but posting is non existent with it. Firefox or Google Chrome are recommended. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

I just wanted to add a little comment about the rhydinpost.com.

Though much of the writing for that website comes from me and a few other official Post writers, Paige has taken the tweets, the articles, and the bios that we have written and has turned them into something creative, colorful and interactive. I just needed to take this time to praise her for all her hard work in the complete creation, construction and maintenance of this project. It?s very impressive, and I am glad to have her on my team.

She will be minding the page, so please contact her directly if you have any thoughts or questions.

Any questions about the Post in general or about article ideas should still be fielded to me. Thank you, and enjoy!

Edited to add: We will also continue to make all our posts in this folder. The website is merely another alternate.

Certain things have come up this month. As a matter of fact, a certain many things, and it looks like for the most part my July and part of August will be very busy.

As a result, I must tentatively admit that I will probably be on hiatus writing- and updating-wise, at least until August.

That being said, I still check my PMs every day. If you have a story or a request of any kind, please don't hesitate to PM me and I will try to fit you in and make time for you regardless. This is what I mean by "tentative." I won't have time to go through and read all the updates on the boards every day (which I try to do as much as I can) or sift through logs in search of a story, but if you want to point me in a particular direction I can most definitely give it a look.

As it is, I will still be checking my inbox every day and will likely be around some, so give me a shout if you need me.

I am also planning something for August, so stay tuned!

Have an excellent July, everyone.

Just a quick note:

All those who so graciously agreed to have their characters donate something for the CYC raffle, please PM an IC description to me of your item ASAP; I am hoping to have the official raffle list up no later than SATURDAY. The description can involve anything from a simple explanation of the item to the item's usual asking price. It's entirely up to you.

As I'm sure you'll notice, there was some fighting with the topic-splitting tool.

In an effort to sequester the satirical commentary (now called "For The Record") from "The Buzz" segment, I attempted the monumental feat of clicking the tiny boxes to the right in order to send certain posts to a new topic.

Good god, the CATASTROPHE that ensued.

Despite that I selected exactly the posts I wanted, and both times ensured that I was splitting from the selected topic, somehow wires got crossed and random posts ended up everywhere.

Long story short, I had to repost a few old articles to make up for the mishap, and I am sorry about that. But now the satire and The Buzz are two separate threads. For clarification, the latest post in "For The Record" is new, but none of the others are.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you as always for the continuing readership.

Merry almost Christmas, folks.

Lots of heartache and angst (and lots of work) has gone into putting this year's Top 25 lists together. There are so many people that I would like to include but simply couldn't, but I promise I tried to be as fair as I could (though there is a distinct possibility Emmet himself was trolling). Let the IC debate commence!

Hope everyone is having happy holidays and staying warm!

Translation (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21995): Oh em gee. We?re bankrupt.

Yes, folks, there is a very real possibility that The RhyDin Post will end ? at least for a couple of months - for OOC purposes. And to be honest, I felt like a little part of me died posting that. I will have more information to come in the next couple of weeks, but rather than springing it on you all suddenly I thought I ought to mention it now. Mind you, I am incredibly hopeful that it won?t have to, but I thought I?d put an IC contingency plan in place just in case it does, rather than leave the project hanging.

ICly, this is not just a plea for money. Michael Twert, the EIC, is looking for permanent partners/shareholders of the Post so that the publication will have some stability in the future. Thus, if your character is well off and is interested, please PM me and I?ll give you some further details.

Any updates regarding this matter will be found here and quite possibly on an OOC sister site. More details to come.

Yes, it's true. The Post is ending.

If you are a member of ME, you can read more along the OOC vein about it here (http://me.2phatgeeks.com/index.php/topic,27931.0.html). I have included my goodbyes and thank-yous there, just so I don't have to get all mushy on DM boards.

Let me assure you, it is not easily that I do this. The Post has been an important part of my life for some time now, and I will miss collaborating with all of you and writing about your characters. As it is, I still remain hopeful that I'll be able to revisit this project six or eight months from now. But as everyone on DM so encouragingly says: IRL comes first. So though it is with a heavy heart that I sacrifice one of my favorite things, it is with high hopes that I look forward to the future. We'll just have to see where it goes from there.

Thank you, everyone, for all you have given me and all you have done and contributed. You made this project what it is, and I am so floored and honored that it made it this far.

I'll work on responding to my PMs and fully intend to reply to them all, so until I do I ask you to be patient.

We'll miss you, RhyDin. So long and thanks for all the fish.

You have my sincere thanks for all that you did with The Post and for including all of our characters into it in the entertaining way that you did. My absolute favorite thing to read was the ringside commentary posts you made. Every single one of them had me laughing hard. As you pointed out in your farewell message, one of the old sayings around this place which has really become its motto is "RL comes first" and it's perfectly understandable that you must direct your focus and energies to that but I hope that you return to us and our little game in the not-too-distant future.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever endeavors you pursue out there in the real world and hope you are successful in them.

I have enjoyed playing with and alongside you and look forward to doing so again.

Fond regards,

Tara too

Like everyone else, I'll miss reading the Post, especially the coverage of the duels!  Thanks for giving so much to the community and here's hoping one day you'll find your way back.  Best of luck with everything!

I'll miss you most of all, Scarecrow!

Seriously, though, I'm not quite sure that the RDI community will ever fully recover from the loss of you and The Post.  Your enthusiasm and support for all of the myriad wonderful storylines and characters that breathe life into this place will never quite be replaced.  Thank you so much for your interest, your support, and your wonderful writing.  Please don't stay away too long!

I posted this elsewhere, but it belongs here as well.

Despite knowing that this was coming, reading this no longer means it is some day in the future, but now. I feel as if I'm grieving the loss of an old friend.

Your writing has made me laugh and cry. I had to remember to swallow any food or drink before reading any duel coverage that involved Pete and Chris. The one time they appeared in public was an unforgettable and stellar performance! It was a testament to the boundless energy you put into The Post.

We as a community have been enriched by your energy, your creative effort, and the respect you have shown to your fellow gamers and writers. You accomplished something that few people do. You reached out to the RDI community and pretty much said, "bring it."  And bring it they did. For the last three years, we've seen:
Bane calling out the locals on their wild and crazy antics.
Amelia poking fun of the locals like pointing out most parties end in disaster!
Darien taking on some of the hard to reach locals in interviews.
And so much more.

For those that were watching closely, Bane made a few public appearances (like Color Your City) and brought the house down. Not literally like Batten did, but, hey, that's Batten! Bane was even treated to one of Tass's infamous kisses and was stunned into silence. Who knew Bane could be quiet?

I have had the pleasure of seeing Darien grow and breathe as a character.

Mostly, I am grateful for your friendship. I wish the best for you and hope that your new path in life is a smooth one.

To the owners, editors, writers, and staff of the Rhy'din Post;

It has been my pleasure in my year since taking up residence in Rhy'din to have had your paper delivered to me every day. Each and every time I saw my name in your pages (even the times it was less than flattering), I was delighted to see it, and in between those times I had stories which were amusing, informative and fun to read.

It's been a good year, Post, and should there be a return of your excellent newspaper in the future, I fully expect you to top it.

Best wishes and luck in whatever endeavors you pursue, and 'stay sassy,' to quote a favorite phrase.

Sincerely,

Edward K. Batten

I know I have just come back to the board after a long absence (first came to the board in 2006 but had to leave for RL stuff) but thank you! You have included me briefly in your Post additions and they have been hilarious. I have loved using them in my play in the rooms.

I truly hope you can come back and I have always enjoyed reading your postings (especially the latest one with Brian!).

I give you my best wishes.

Many a folk and good friend have recommended I post these here for those who do not follow polyvore. This is my little side project for now; none of these are officially IC, but the jury is still out on whether I try to make this a thing. Let's play that one by ear.

Likely a good thing these aren't real IC.  It wouldn't be a good start to Nexus Weekly for Candy (current holder of FireStar AND the Tower of Fire) to discover a sex tape that supposedly featured her.  Even if it's impossible... there would be burning involved. ^^

Hehe.. but I still adore Nexus Weekly!

Yay! Full Nexus Weekly!
Title: Re:
Post by: Darien Fenner on June 30, 2012, 04:25:54 AM
FAQ's about Nexus Weekly:

1. Who do we have to thank for the full version?

BEL! After Bel's comment, I began thinking about what the heck the whole magazine would look like if I were flipping through it. And thus, I became obsessed with figuring that out. So thank you, Bel!

2. Is this IC?

YES. Volume 1 is officially IC.

3. My character wouldn't do that...

If your character is in NW and you do not like how they are portrayed, PM me! If you have any questions, PM me! I went through this issue with Post gossip. In my experience, it takes much less time to just yank out the characters who have issues after the fact, rather than PMing every single character mentioned and asking for permission. I have no qualms with editing a NW page or a Post article. I do have qualms with waiting two weeks before I can post one.

If your character is caught in an odd pose that is uncharacteristic of them, the way I see it you can do one of two things:

- Play into it: Holy CRAP how did they find me at the beach how HUMILIATING I am going to pop a cap in their ass!

- Dismiss it: Wow. Photoshop has really gone downhill.

Again, if you're unhappy with either concept, write me and I'll happily yank you out entirely.

4. How can I make sure I am mentioned in the next NW?

PM me! If you want a picture of your character displayed, I need a real life likeness: a model, actor/actress, etc. I can work without it if I have to and I'll do my best, but so far the easiest characters to stick in the tabloids are the ones with lots of pictures available on the internet.

5. Does that mean you're limited to writing about characters whose avatars are only based on IRL models?

Nope! Even if I can't find a true life likeness I can still write script about them.

6. Whoa, whoa... Does this mean the Post is never coming back!?

Nope again. This is just my interim project until I can get the Post back on its feet. Rest assured, I hope more than anyone that the newspaper will live again. And it will soon. I promise.

Any questions, PM me!

I cannot express to you just how much I love Nexus Weekly Vol. 1, page 6. You did beautifully, and I know it was super hard to find a model that fits Sal. I don't really have a celebrity I go by, and the one picture I use is the one picture of an entire single model that even looks remotely close to how I envision him. Also: lulz. Lots of lulz.

It's been a while, so I think it's time for a reminder. I refer you to the FAQs (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=159629#159629) for Nexus Weekly.

While I do my best to get the necessary permissions for each issue, because I am human occasionally some oversights are had and people fall through the cracks. If that ever happens, if you are unsatisfied in any way, send me a PM and I will not hesitate in the least to yank the part you're concerned about. While one of my goals may be to shamelessly promote IC conflict and facilitate good roleplay, making players unhappy is NOT one of them. This project is meant to be entertaining; not to create OOC upset.

Also, in the last two issues I included a section entitled "Great on Paper." These images were taken from deviantart after hours and hours of searching/browsing. I have the names of the artists, so if you would like to know a particular one, write me and let me know.

Thanks!

What do ya know? I finally met a deadline I set for myself.

Since I have been MIA, I pray this monster (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24572) of an issue that I've been working on the past couple of weeks makes up for it. I am 90% certain I got everyone's permission to use their character, but in case I didn't, don't hesitate to write me!

Happy New Year!

I must confess I've never played Magic the Gathering, but I *love* the Xanth card!

Two questions, if you don't mind:
1. Death "Squirrel"? Is that a Magic the Gathering term, or were you being funny?

2. Can I use that card as the Portrait in my Profile?

Four years ago today, on August 12, 2009, the Post became a reality. It is only fitting that today be the day it is reopened.

We're back, ladies and gentlemen! I look forward to catching up and seeing just what interesting things RhyDin has to offer!

I suppose I should take this opportunity to remind everyone how this works. If you are running a SL that you would like promoted, PM me!. If you see a SL that you think is news-worthy, PM me! If you saw something entertaining or interesting in play and feel it deserves mention, PM me! If there is a duel that was exceptionally crazy... You get the idea.

Thank you for all the warm welcomes, and we'll be seeing you around!

ETA: For those who are unfamiliar with or new to the Post and its dealings, I refer you to the FAQ (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=136899#136899) thread. I will be glad to answer any other questions via PM.

1.  GLAD YOU ARE BACK!!!  Seriously, very very delighted with this.

2.  For the record, Gem has died once. Once, and ONLY once. If that is the prerequisite for making  a square in such a manner for Bingo, then I shall from this point forward expect to see the names of other notables who have died, such as Amthy and Jewell.  If, on the other hand, this is a slam aimed at more supposed deaths, then someone needs to get their fact straight. Just saying.

3. I love the idea of this Bingo game. I don't even mind being on there, as long as it wasn't some kind of backhanded backstab. If I am perceiving this wrong, then do please forgive my confused perceptions.

Are we making sense yet? We will. (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26248)

IC (and more OOC) explanations will be had soon, but just to clarify for now: yes, something strange is happening to certain aspects of the time-space equilibrium in RhyDin as a result of that cosmic alignment, and the Post isn't spared from it.

More to come!

A few announcements:

So, so pleased to see so many people taking advantage of Sublimation (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26248). Everything is looking FANTASTIC! Just a reminder - make sure to include a link to your posts in the community thread so that everyone can enjoy them. Keep up the awesome work!

The talented folks behind the upcoming Masquerade (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26263) have put up the official threads in the Community folder. Check it out and post your costumes there.

The Talon of Redwin (http://www.ringsofhonor.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27182) tournament over on the RoH site is open to ALL DUELISTS below the rank of Warlord. If you haven't dueled before and want to give it a shot or at least check it out, that's always a fun way to try.

Also, this is your usual reminder that if you see something news-worthy or would like a story to be written about a character or an event/SL, please hit me up with a PM about it.

I'm eager to see what else everyone comes up with! Good job, and GOOD LUCK!
Title: Re:
Post by: Riddle Me This on August 30, 2013, 09:53:22 AM
The following isn't necessarily me trying to be rude, but...it may be a ittle ranty because, I'll admit, I'm kinda frustrated. I don't mean to offend anyone, however.

On August 15th, the following was posted in the Rhy'Din Post of 'Who are all of these people?':

Quote
So there?s absolutely nothing wrong with cat people talking about sex or a perfectly polite alien creature? but a sphinx is suddenly worrisome? A sphinx telling riddles is practically the most ordinary thing EVER. Who knows why Vera got all tizzy during a sphinx?s entertaining Q&A recently, but at least the group she hangs with (Jake and Lola ? not Lola Granger. A different Lola) is fairly grounded. Come on, Vera. You?ve been to RhyDin before! You can?t let these things faze you. RhyDin may not be anywhere as crazy as it once was, but I?ll be damned if I don?t look both ways for suicidal carnies riding vampire ostriches before I cross the street.

As a player who plays a lot of monsters and creatures, I find this kind of attitude amazingly, remarkably frustrating. The entire idea behind RPing, in general, is about fantasy. I understand, of course, that it doesn't have to always be literal fantasy and thus, doesn't always have to include dragons and unicorns, but...I found this particular piece of the column almost a little rude.

To chastise - even in IC - another character for finding something fantastic...well, fantastic? What's so wrong with that? What's so wrong with characters still finding strange, amazing beings outrageous, bewildering, and awe-inspiring? When did sitting around drinking beer and talking about ridiculously mundane things become the expected and, from the way this particular blurb comes off to me, the demanded?

If I wanted to sit around in a bar and be surrounded by humans? I'd log off my computer and leave the house. But there's a belief that seems to run rampant in DM/RDI,  that we've 'seen it all, we can't be shocked anymore', that is amazingly frustrating for people who still enjoy playing creatures. Creatures who do not conform to the norms, who are not cat people talking about sex or friendly aliens, acting like relatable creatures(because that gets more attention, of course) - when they're clearly not.

If another player decides to act on that, and have their player be surprised/delighted/terrified...is that such a horrible thing? Does it have to be called out and, from the way this reads, ridiculed? I understand that not everyone wants to get involved with things like that, and that's fine, (though I don't understand it personally; you can't meet most fantastic creatures in real life, and if they're well played, why wouldn't you want to interact with them?), but was it really necessary to belittle someone else having a good time, who wasn't sitting around drinking tea and eating crumpets?

I'm pretty sure that's not what Gary Gygax had in mind, really, when he decided to make D&D.

It's bad enough that most people ignore fantastic creatures, but others literally go out of their way to be upset and annoyed  when said characters are around. Of course, if those creatures instantly start to humanize themselves, that's fine, that's perfectly acceptable, but if you play a creature that doesn't, that seems wary or doesn't fit into the societal norm of the room, at that moment? People start sighing, start rolling their eyes, start talking about how it's nothing new, nothing surprises them anymore, et cetera.

Look, if you don't want to play with fantastic creatures, maybe you shouldn't be RPing in a setting that is literally defined as the meeting places of all times and realms, where fantasy happens. But seeing as that's not going to happen....

Can we please try not to belittle and ridicule those players that DO still want to play with the odd, the strange, the fantastic? Who still have their imaginations firmly intact? Because when you publicly humiliate people like that? They no longer want to play in scenarios such as that, which leaves those of us who DO like playing the odd, the strange, and the obscure with no one left to play with.

Based on your posts in the OOC area, I know that you're new to the forum, so, I am going to be as polite as possible.

Can we please try to remember to separate In Character and Out of Character events as well as understand that one of the standing rules for "The Post," an In Character publication, has always been that player may request their characters be removed from the gossip and other columns at any time? Let us also remember that this reminder (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=183049#183049) was posted by Darien's player right after the column you're referencing was posted. 1. I've been RPing on DM for over 6 years now - not to mention the near decade I RPed on AOL at the RDI. Please try to remember that just because a Screen Name is new, its player might not be.
2. I know the difference between OOC and IC. I know that the Rhy'Din Post is an IC publication. That doesn't change the validity of my statements, in my opinion.
3. The section that I posted was more about Vera than myself and by the time it was brought to my attention - about 3 hours ago or so - it'd already been published for 2 weeks, so I really don't see the point in asking for it to be removed, quite frankly.
4. Last I checked, this was the OOC section of this folder. Thus, I think I'm entitled to post my OOC opinion about something that was written, just like everyone else has done so far.

You offered a personal opinion on what you find to be a pervasive attitude in RP across the site.

There are better areas for discussion as such than to single that out in one player's forum.

I won't speak for Collie, but it's worth looking a little closer at the IC / OOC distinction here.

I do see where you're coming from and I'm not saying that you've necessarily blurred the line, but I feel you need to take the character of the author into mind.  This is a jaded gossip columnist.  It's well within his character to be dismissive and even degrading to a wide range of activities and character types, just as you might run into any number of characters in the Inn itself doing the same.

That Emmet Bane is this way as a character, shouldn't be interpreted to mean that all Post contributing columnists are of similar mind or that the Post as a whole is setting out to "belittle and ridicule those players that DO still want to play with the odd, the strange, the fantastic".  It's one character and it well fits that character's personality.   I'm sure a number of other characters on staff would have felt differently and perhaps have been equally enthralled by the presence of a sphinx.

Before Suliss suggested moving the discussion, I had prepared something along those lines.

I have a feeling Riddle Me This is having some frustrations about other things and this article was a tipping point? (Maybe Maybe not? I don't know RMT...) Not going to comment on the post and the IC/OCC, I mean it's out there now, so what can be done?

BUT. Here are my thoughts/suggestions.

Are RDI players and characters getting a lax feeling about the "fantastic" and the weird? Are you (general) getting bummed that no one seems to appreciate the fantasy RP that you work hard to create? Are you feeling left out? Unappreciated? Are you not getting the RP that you are hoping for? Not enough collaborations? Are your characters upset about being RAWRsome, but ignored and they are bugging you to get them some play?

If you (general, anyone) would like to talk more about this. Let's do it! How about on Mutual Endeavors, The DM OOC or, Greater Realms. 3 places where people are way happy to communicate and plot. Plus, a lot more people may see it and you'll have a chance to mingle and make connections! YAY.

I'm sure we can come up with a productive way and lots of cool ideas on what to do to fix hurt, upset, let down, sadsy feelings.

For clarification:

The latest Nexus Weekly (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26322) is an issue that happened to make it into circulation from an alternate version of RhyDin (tied to the Sublimation SL (http://rdi.dragonsmark.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26248)). Feel free to play with or into it as you like!

I am fairly certain all necessary permissions were obtained, but regardless... As always, if you have questions or concerns, PM me directly.

Here is a larger version of the Duel of Swords board game.

Title: Re:
Post by: Ebon Ilnaren on January 23, 2017, 09:48:29 PM
Have y'all considered a thread for an Op-Ed page?  That's the page in a newspaper opposite the editorials (hence the name, "Op-Ed") where people not part of the newspaper staff can submit commentaries and opinions on events.

The reason I ask is because I wanted a place for Ebon to post a response to the whole "pro-human" movement, and figured the Post would be a good place if it had such a page.  :)  But I didn't want to create one just for me.
Title: Re:

Letters to the Columns would work for that, no? At last check, the editor was named Michael Twert.

[quote:fd3bfb2da0="PrlUnicorn"]Letters to the Columns would work for that, no? At last check, the editor was named Michael Twert.
Letter columns are more for responses to stuff the newspaper prints, though, rather than as a commentary on events/news by someone unaffiliated with the paper.  So it's not quite the same.
Title: Re:
Post by: Knightfall on February 02, 2017, 01:08:44 AM
A little late, but if I could second Ebon's suggestion...

I love the Post, and I always love to see new material here, and also understand getting swamped and sometimes having to go long periods without posting. That being said...

I like the idea of the Op-ed just because it kind of preserves the integrity of the newspaper by virtue of the fact that, as Ebon said, they're by people who have no association with the paper.  Which would be a good thing, given the number and variance in opinions that could be presented. Also, sometimes, you just want to throw down a big piece of text, and as a letter it can feel somehow inadequate.

In rather, loose and chaotic summation... anything that adds posts to the Post in a way that preserves the intent and integrity of the post is good, isn't it? Especially if it's hard to find time to work on it?  I can't say for sure if writing an Op-Ed is something I'd do myself, because it's all time permitting as well, but I have to admit that the idea is appealing to me - take that as either a compliment or a threat, as you see fit.

Post by: Darien Fenner on March 23, 2017, 05:14:19 PM
Hi folks,

As I'm seeing some new characters around, I thought I'd post a reminder of my character-mention policy.

Waaaaaay back near the start of the Post I would email players ahead of time to get their advanced permission to mention their character in articles or programs. Unfortunately, lots of material had to be scrapped because players took days or even weeks to get back to me, and by then it was no longer current.

If you are unhappy with a character mention and wish for me to remove it, PM me and I will remove it immediately. I ask then that that removal is respected in-character. That is, be polite and do not mention that portion of the article in character in order to respect the player behind that mention.

All that being said, I'm limping along trying to catch up after all these years, so by all means hit me with a message if you have juicy gossip or a story idea. Thanks!
